O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while at high school. She made it to the top ten spots because of the enthusiasm shown by judges for her performance. O'Neil received high praise by judges, but she suffered major losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. The judges were surprised by her performance, and advised viewers to choose singers who were well-known like Melissa.
